Depp slept here

Oshkosh was not the only city to benefit from "Public Enemies." Downtown Appleton's economy got an economic boost from the presence of the movie's big star.

Johnny Depp stayed at the Copperleaf Hotel for four nights, ate at Flanagan's Wine Review and Black & Tan, and had a drink at the DejaVu Martini Lounge.

The night at Flanagan's, a week ago Wednesday, started at 9 p.m. Depp and nine others had dinner ($300), wines from the reserve list at $300 to $500 per bottle ($2,350) and left a generous tip ($1,500).

Plus, said owner Pat Flanagan, a member of the Copperleaf staff came down the day before to get four bottles of vintage wine. All told, said Flanagan, "The impact here was well over $6,000. Johnny Depp is welcome here any time."

Flanagan said he had a chance to talk to the actor and found him to be a gentleman. "He reached across the bar and shook hands. He shook hands with everyone on the staff."

Depp, by the way, ordered the flat iron steak, medium well.

Meanwhile, director Michael Mann and some of the production crew stayed in the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel. "Public Enemies" rented Park Central's Mustangs country bar for a private cast and director's party April 12. Last Friday some of the cast and crew patronized Katsu-Ya and Speakeasy.
