Johnny and Vanessa have never cared about what anyone thinks about what they're wearing.  Johnny has been wearing thrift shop clothes since the beginning of his career, and could give a rat's *** what people think.  Vanessa is brave enough to go shopping in ritzy stores in L.A. and Hollywood with her hair in tangles and frizz and no make-up.  She's constantly ridiculed online for looking tired, haggard, older than Johnny, and unattractive.  But that doesn't stop her from doing it again and again.  So do you think she's actually concerned about what people think?  If she was concerned, she'd start wearing make-up and styling her hair before she went out.  Worrying about what people will say about their attire has nothing to do with why they aren't seen out in public together as a couple more than a few times a year.

In one sentence you're saying that people are too quick to pass judgement on celebrities because of what we see, or don't see, in pictures.  But then you also say that you're convinced that Johnny and Vanessa are still a couple and in love because of what you saw when you looked at the pictures of them on the summer yacht vacation.  So you're passing judgement based on what you saw in those yacht photos.  It's OK to pass judgement when the judgement is that they're in love, but not OK to pass judgement if the judgement is that they're having problems?  You're assuming that because they greeted each other with a hug and kiss that it proves they're in love?  The paparazzi get photos of Courteney Cox and David Arquette kissing and hugging too, but the two of them are divorced.  They just happen to still love and respect each other and give each other a kiss and hug when they meet up to spend time with their daughter together.  A paparazzi camera can take dozens of photos in seconds and make it look like it was actually a much longer period of time.  A two-second kiss can end up looking like a full-blown make-out session.  We don't know if it was a quick kiss and hug in greeting, or if it was an extended kiss and hug of two lovers.  Because Johnny and Vanessa sat on the edge of the boat facing each other, their legs dangling over the edge and feet touching, they looked like they were in love?  Lots of fans see it that way.  But I know of others who have said that those pictures looked like a couple who were struggling with something - like they were having a very serious heart-to-heart discussion away from the rest of the family and crew that was on the yacht.  People are going to read different things into seeing the same pictures depending on what you'd like to believe.

The yacht vacation was 5 months ago.  A lot can happen in a celebrity relationship in five months.  Heidi Klum and Seal made an appearance together on one of the late night shows in their Halloween costumes on October 31, 2011 and gushed about each other and how much they love their annual Halloween parties.  That was less than 3 months ago, yet she's supposedly filing for divorce this week and their split will be on the cover of People magazine this week.  She's apparently been "shopping" high calibre Hollywood divorce attorneys for weeks before making her choice as to which one she wanted to represent her.

Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins split up after 23 years together and fans were shocked.  They weren't married, but were considered to be a Hollywood couple who would stay together forever.  Tim later said that he was to blame and that he'd had a mid-life crisis.  The same thing some in the press are speculating that Johnny might be having.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand were cuddling and making goo-goo eyes at each other on the red carpet just weeks before they took separate Christmas vacations on separate continents where neither of them wore their wedding rings.  Then he filed for divorce.

Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez appeared on stage together on May 25th on American Idol.  He sang a sexy love song in Spanish while she danced provacatively around him, stroking him, writhing, shaking her booty and rubbing up against him in a skimpy outfit.  You could almost feel the heat coming off the TV screen!  A month and a half later they were filing for divorce.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were Hollywood's "Golden Couple" for years. Hollywood's Sweethearts.  Everyone thought they would never split up and would be having children soon.  The world was shocked when they announced their divorce.  No one knew yet that Brad had fallen in love with Angelina Jolie on a movie set, although it didn't take long for the two of them to start appearing together.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette were another couple that everyone thought was the perfect couple with the perfect little girl, and everyone was shocked when they announced their divorce.  The two of them have managed to remain good friends, supportive of each other, and they co-parent their daughter almost as if they were still together.  There have been pictures of the two of them hugging and kissing when they greet each other, even though they're now divorced and David has started dating someone else.  Every time a website or magazine posts a new picture of them hugging and kissing, there are rumors that the two of them are getting back together.  When David was on Dancing with the Stars, Courteney and Coco were in the audience every night cheering him on.  They still have love and respect for each other, but they're no longer together as a couple.  They're one couple who obviously knows that it's best for their child if they can get along and show respect for each other.

The list could go on and on of the Hollywood couples who have fooled us all into thinking that everything in their lives was perfect, only to shock us with what seems to us to be a sudden divorce or break-up.  In fact, most of them were having problems all along but were able to hide it from the world.  In my opinion, it seems like Johnny and Vanessa have spent more time apart in recent years than they have together, which is why it wasn't shocking to me to hear recent rumors of trouble in their relationship.  In the beginning of their family life together, they used to have a pact with each other that they'd never spend more than two weeks apart.  They mentioned that pledge in quite a few of their interviews back at that time.  Somewhere along the way, that seems to have gone by the wayside.

And, you're correct... People magazine didn't mention in their article that Vanessa had performed at a concert in Paris on the same night that Johnny was at the Paris premiere of The Rum Diary in November, but instead said that she had attended a concert.  But that doesn't explain why they stayed in separate hotels and weren't seen together the entire time they were both in Paris.  Johnny was there for at least two days.  If they're madly in love and in Paris, why aren't they staying in the same hotel?  If Johnny Depp was your lover and the two of you were in Paris, would you be in a separate bed in a different hotel at night?  Not me!

But People magazine also got something else wrong.  They said Johnny and Vanessa haven't been seen on a red carpet in over a year.  It's actually been much longer than a year.  If we're talking about premieres, I don't think they've been on a red carpet together at a premiere since POTC 2 in Paris (2006) or Finding Neverland in London (2004).  The last time I recall them being on a red carpet together was the Chanel party in Cannes in May, 2010 when Vanessa was the guest of honor.  For those who have been Depp fans for many years, we all remember that Johnny has always had his previous girlfriends with him on the red carpet, so that's why it seems strange to some that he and Vanessa are rarely seen together at each other's premieres, awards shows or events.  When Johnny and Winona were together, they walked the red carpet together at each other's premieres.  When Johnny was with Kate, she was always on the red carpet with him at premieres, film festivals and awards shows.  Early in their relationship, Vanessa used to walk the red carpet with Johnny and be there when he was given awards, even when the children were very young.  So apparently Johnny enjoys having his partner with him on the red carpet if she wants to be there.

Many of Johnny's fans are totally blaming and dissing People magazine for printing that cover story which they believe is totally false and fabricated.  They're talking about People magazine as if it's in the same gossip rag category as Star or the National Enquirer.  However, those same fans were deliriously happy when People magazine named Johnny "Sexiest Man Alive" for two separate years, and those fans chose to believe everything in those articles at that time.  We can't have it both ways.  We can't say that the magazine is fabulous when it prints something we agree with and support, but then say it's trash when it prints something we don't agree with or don't want to believe.

I have no idea whether Johnny and Vanessa are still in love and together, or whether they're leading separate lives and are splitting up.   None of us do.  Only time will tell.  But I can't say with absolute conviction that there's NO WAY that they could possibly be splitting up, which is what many fans are saying because that's what they want to believe.  If it's all rumors and they're still madly in love and together, that's great for them and their family and for their fans.  But if they've grown apart in recent years and are separating, it's something that we, as fans, have to deal with realistically rather than denying that it could be possible.
